L’analisi strutturale e le fasi
2019
The X13-X13.1 is one of the most considerable cubicles in the catacomb. It consists of a quadrangular funerary chamber preceded by a short dromos placed along the gallery X. The tombs are several and of different types: arcosolia for adults and children, lithic sarcophagi, pavimental graves ("formae"), and very interesting areas for ritual "refrigerium" The archaeological investigations and the structural date indicate that the duplex cubicle is the result of different phases of development, and that it was used by a numerous and wealthy family group for several generations, by the end of the fourth/beginning of the fifth to the seventh/eighth century, as it seems also indicated by the pott…
Ecclesia carinensis.
2020
The Early Christian cemetery discovered by chance in Villagrazia di Carini in 1899, then forgotten and negletted, has been brought to light from the year 2000 to today thanks to the systematic teamwork of the University of Palermo and the Pontificia Commissione di Archeologia Sacra (PCAS). The unexpected dimension of the site, the largest underground cemetery of Early Christianity so far known in western Sicily, has finally allowed the historiographical debate to find a meeting point on the age-old problem of the existence of ecclesia carinensis, an Early Byzantine diocese attested by the written sources up to the eighth century and disappeared after the centuries of the Islamic domination …

2018

The territory of Carini, on the northwest coast of Sicily, 30 km from Palermo, is often mentioned by ancient sources. According Thucydides in this area was located the ancient Hykkara. Itinerarium Antonini recalls the statio of Hykkara along the via Valeria. This route in Late Antiquity became very important for the deportatio ad aquam of the agricoltural products. Catacomba di Villagrazia di Carini. Il cubicolo X20. Ricerche 2008-2013
2014
